| From Andrew Holman Smith & Nephew |
Andrew Holman, former Smith & Nephew, Inc. President of the Americas for the Orthopedics Global Business Unit, considers the set of principles in basketball he learned way back in college as one of his most important foundations in conquering the business world. Granted with a full-ride scholarship to play varsity basketball for Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida—where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology—Mr. Holman showed immense capability to construct and cultivate his team, proving that he had the leadership and creative skills necessary to triumph in any test of the athletic arena.
Now accepting the challenges of the corporate world, Andrew Holman of Smith & Nephew, Inc. continues to integrate sports principles with his leadership strategies. As is often described by sports enthusiasts like him, business is similar to basketball; it is a team comprising many members where there must be a “point guard” to put every team member in the right position to succeed. It was by this means that Andrew Holman was able to recruit, hire, and cultivate 12 exemplary commercial leaders during his time as Vice President of Sales & Sales Operations for Smith & Nephew, Inc. This further made him the right man to grow the company into a powerhouse business institution.
Mr. Holman took under his wing the said group of men and women who had potential, but had not yet found the right opportunity to excel. Seeing that these individuals had the capabilities, he confidently knew that if given the chance, they could each take a leadership role. Certain enough, these 12 turned into seven RVPs, the Vice Presidents of U.S. Marketing, Commercial Operations, Logistics, and the General Managers for Canada and Latin America.
